FAMOUS VEGETARIAN ATHLETES
Very few people realize just how many famous and world class athletes were on vegetarian diets at the height of their success. For many like Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King it extended their amazing careers many, many years.
It was when Martina Navratilova was on the Dr. Robert Haas "Eat To Win" diet that she was beating women tennis pros half her age and was at the top of her game.
Edwin Moses was the world's premier 400-meter hurdle champion and he was not beat for 8 years in his event and he attributed much of his success to his vegetarian diet.
Vegetarian-athletes
Other incredible vegetarian athletes include Carl Lewis who won 9 gold medals and Leroy Burrell who took turns claiming the title of "fastest man in the world."
In the ranks of major league sports there is no shortage of athlete vegetarians who were at the top of their game. Hank Aaron, Jim Katt and Major league manager Tony Larussa were all vegetarians.
As were NFLer's Joe Namath, Lawrence Phillips and Marv Levey. Numerous Pro Skateboarder's, endurance athletes, swimmers, and weight-lifters do not include meat in their diets.
As far as triathlon goes, you have to go no further than the greatest triathlete of all, Dave Scott, for an example of a vegetarian athlete who performed at the highest of levels year after year.
Of course he won Ironman Hawaii 6 times and when I was in Kona in 1984 to take part in the Ironman rumors swirled around about how Dave Scott was spotted in local restaurants eating huge servings of pasta and salad.
Dave held a degree in exercise physiology and one of the reasons he did so well back in the 1980's on the triathlon scene most likely had a lot to do with his knowledge of food and how it powered the human body.
It would be decades before the average triathlete began to understand the true value of consuming the right balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat in order to have optimum performance and recovery from both racing and training.--- sources by IRONSTRUCK

Dave Scott
Dave Scott holds the record for most Iron Man World Championship victories ever (along with his rival Mark Allen, who managed to rack up an equal number of wins). The Iron Man competition, which consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26 mile marathon run, is one of the most strenuous physical feats in the world. And Scott won six of them, all while vegetarian. He even came out of retirement at 40 to compete again, and took second place. Today, at age 55, he still participates. In other words, this is one gnarly vegetarian dude.

What is Open Water Swimming?

Open water swimming takes place in outdoor bodies of water such as open oceans, bays, lakes, rivers, canals, reservoirs, etc....

(Fédération Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA). The belief is widely held that swimming is the best exercise in the world as it works your whole body)

Triathletes competing in open water swimmingThe modern age of open water swimming is sometimes taken to be May 3, 1810, when Lord Byron swam several miles to cross the Hellespont (now known as the Dardanelles) from Europe to Asia.[1].

In the first edition of the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, the swimming competition was held in open water. In 2000, the Olympic Games newly included a triathlon with a 1500 m swim-leg. In 2008, The Olympic Games newly included a 10 kilometer swim. 5, 10, and 25 km open water races are included in the General Fina World Championships.

TRI/OPEN WATER SWIMMING
by TOTAL IMMERSION SWIMMING

Principles
TI starts from the basis that traditional swim instruction - such as that offered by the Red Cross - focuses on getting the swimmer through the water as fast as possible.[citation needed] TI instead focuses primarily on efficiency and comfort in the water, and emphasizes form over conditioning; the swimmer's form in the water is more important than the swimmer's speed through the water.

The style of swimming it stresses can be beneficial to entry-level swimmers and also for distance swimmers, as the goal is to make swimming more natural. TI approaches swimming as a mindful practice done in the spirit of yoga or tai chi. The aim is to become more self-aware and to feel "one with the water." Lap counts and pace times are considered less important than improving one's efficiency.

The instruction focuses on four essential skills, which are non-instinctive and counter-intuitive to most swimmers.

Balance - the body is level in the water, with the head farther down and the legs farther up than is instinctive.
Active Streamlining - reducing drag as much as possible, and keeping the longest possible body shape in the water, to increase efficiency.
Rhythmic Weight Shifts - using weight shifts to generate force uses less energy than simply using force to pull
Friction - actively discovering what generates the most friction, and a focus on "holding onto your place in the water" instead of pushing forward.
